Idoni Recognizes County’s Evolving Needs
WHITE PLAINS: According to the United States (U.S.) Census as of 2016, 35 million U.S. residents over the age of eighteen speak a language other than English at home, which makes up more than fifteen percent (15%) of the country’s adult population. In Westchester County, estimates show that more than thirty percent (30%) of all residents speak non- English languages.
The Westchester County Clerk's Office recognizes this reality and has taken the lead to make sure all the county's residents can work with our office without a language barrier. That is why the Clerk's office is now offering an interpretation service through LanguageLine Solutions. LanguageLine Solutions offers live interpreters fluent in more than two hundred forty (240) languages, twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.
"Westchester County, like America, is a melting pot which has become a destination to work and live for people from all over the world. It’s vital that their government is accessible to them," stated Westchester County Clerk Timothy C. Idoni.
The Office of the County Clerk is committed to ensuring access to the Office’s services to individuals of limited English proficiency. In 2017, the County Clerk installed the Google Translate module to enable the translation of the text of the County Clerk’s website in over one hundred (100) languages. Language assistance services are provided by the New York State Court system in the provision of services by the County Clerk in his capacity as the clerk of the Supreme and County courts.
As of July 1, 2019, the County Clerk has expanded the language assistance services to include interpretation services to meet the needs of individuals utilizing the County Clerk’s non-court related services in his legal, licensing, and land records divisions.
